24 August 2012 - Community Encouraged to Stand-Up Against Discrimination

The NSW Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) today announced a series of rolling, consultative workshops aimed at uncovering and identifying the areas of life in which people experience discrimination harassment, and at educating the community about the extent of anti-discrimination protections available.

The workshops are generously funded by a Commonwealth Attorney-General Human Rights Education Framework grant.

Starting with a Youth workshop in Parramatta on Wednesday 29 August, the series of consultation sessions will be used to equip individuals with knowledge to enable them to access appropriate services and mechanisms to better protect their human rights.

The project will particularly target marginalised groups within broader sex, sexuality and gender diverse communities.

Justin Koonin, Co-Convenor, GLRL said, “There are currently no comprehensive federal anti-discrimination protections for sexuality, sex and gender diverse people despite the fact that these groups continue to be subject to discrimination in all aspects of daily life."

“These workshops provide a platform and opportunity to open a dialogue on these issues and empower people to claim their rights”, Koonin concluded.

Current federal anti-discrimination legislation prohibits discrimination on several grounds, including sex, race, ethnicity, marital status and disability. While each state and territory has anti-discrimination laws offering protection on the grounds of sexual orientation and sex and/or gender identity, these protections are highly disparate and terminology is inconsistent.

As part of the federal National Human Rights Action Plan, a consolidation of federal anti-discrimination legislation is expected to provide protection on the grounds of sexual orientation and sex and/or gender diversity for the first time.

The first NSW GLRL anti-discrimination workshops will occur on the following dates/locations:

Date Workshop Venue
29 August Youth Out West, Mars Cafe, 331 Church St, Paramatta
8 Sep Youth Twenty10, 45 Bedford St, Newtown
6 Oct Ageing/Seniors Sydney Junction Hotel, 8 Beaumont St, Hamilton (Newcastle)
Late Oct Women Venue TBC
