9 May 2007 - Same-sex couples and families left out of Budget sweetners
Big boosts in family payments and tax benefits under the Federal Budget would again exclude same-sex families due to discriminatory laws, the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby has said. “It is disappointing that a budget which included $70 billion in sweeteners could not find the money to include same-sex couples and families. We’ve heard arguments that equality would be “too costly” for this government to consider. The truth is, they are just delaying the recognition of same-sex relationships because they simply don’t believe we deserve to have the money spent on us”, said Spokesperson for the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, Ghassan Kassisieh.

“They are happy to take our contributions and taxes with one hand, but they are surprisingly unable to distribute the benefits we are entitled to  as equal members of the Australian community with the other.”
