Uncloseting Discrimination

The GLRL is launching a series of consultations over July to better understand how discrimination affects individuals in the LGBTI community, and invites you to participate in any of a number of workshops on the issue.

Each workshop will have a specific focus: youth; ageing; multicultural; faith-based; transgender, intersex and other sex and/or gender diverse communities. Details for each event are listed below.

The workshops will also canvass the current state of anti discrimination laws at both a State and Federal level as the Australian Government consolidates the anti-discrimination laws.

Consultation Launch

When: 7pm Thursday 23rd June

Where: Stonewall Hotel, Oxford Street, Darlinghurst

Ageing

Ageing issues are of particular concern to the Australian community with an ageing population. In the LGBTI community in particular, the effect of legislative reform has not been fully considered in relation to older people.

Legal recognition has coerced some older people into 'coming out' to public institutions, and this increased visibility has led to considerable discrimination. Such discrimination has been raised in relation to accessing healthcare and aged care services.

This consultation will invite participants to share their concerns with ageing and aged-care issues.

When: 6:30pm Monday 4th July

Where: Surry Hills Neighbourhood Community Centre (Surry Hills Library) , 405 Crown Street, Surry Hills

Multicultural

Same-sex attracted and gender diverse people from multicultural communities negotiate their culture and ethnicity in distinctive ways when it comes to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Given the breadth of such communities, this consultation will focus on the intersections of race, ethnicity and culture with sex, sexuality and gender diversity.

When: 6:30pm Monday 11th July

Where: Surry Hills Neighbourhood Community Centre (Surry Hills Library), 405 Crown Street, Surry Hills

Youth

Young people often face considerable discrimination and vilification in school-based contexts and when 'coming out' to family and peers. Discrimination is compounded by a lack of financial independence, misinformation, and limited support in schools or local communities.

In order to explore the impact of discrimination, we invite young same-sex attracted or gender questioning young people to discuss their experience in both public and domestic contexts.

When: 2pm Saturday 16th July

Where: Twenty10, 43 Bedford Street, Newtown

Faith and Religion

Sexuality and religion are often treated as antithetical in public debates. However, many LGBTI people identify as religious, and freedom from discrimination in faith-based contexts (schools, employment etc) is difficult with the existence of wide-ranging exemptions to anti-discrimination law.

This consultation will address the ways religion and protections for sexual and gender minorities can be addressed in anti-discrimination law.

When: 6:30pm Monday 18th July

Where: Surry Hills Neighbourhood Community Centre (Surry Hills Library), 405 Crown Street, Surry Hills

Sex and Gender Diversity

In public policy discussions and lobbying done under the broad umbrella of 'LGBT rights', intersex, transgender, or other sex and/or gender diverse voices and concerns are often sidelined.

While sexuality, sex and gender identities are related, they should not be conflated. This workshop will seek to tease out some of these complexities by bringing together people who identify as intersex, transgender, or sex and/or gender diverse to share some of their experiences.

When: 6:30pm Monday 25th July

Where: Surry Hills Neighbourhood Community Centre (Surry Hills Library), 405 Crown Street, Surry Hills

Disability

People with disability frequently experience discrimination, vilification and human rights violations on the basis of having a disability and being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or intersex.

The disability rights movement has been addressing the exclusion and stigma that people with disability experience, however barriers and discrimination towards GLBTQI people with disability remain.

In order to explore the impact of discrimination we invite GLBTQI people with disability to discuss their experiences.

Please note that there will be an Auslan interpreter at the event, and the venue is wheelchair accessible.
