Dear Member of the Legislative Council,

New South Wales has been a leader in driving legislative change to guarantee equality for lesbians, gay men and their families, most recently with the historic reform of same-sex adoption laws in 2010 that eliminated the last piece of direct legislative discrimination against same-sex couples in NSW.

You will soon have the opportunity to reaffirm this record by supporting the motion to be put by Cate Faehrmann MLC in support of marriage equality, which calls on the Commonwealth Parliament to amend the Marriage Act.

The requirements and process for getting married in Australia have been long determined by secular laws which govern everyone. Legislating for marriage equality would allow formal recognition for same-sex couples and parents and ensure these secular laws apply equally to all citizens.

The public support for changing the law is overwhelming and I urge you to represent the views and values of our state by voting in support of this motion, sending a strong and clear message to the Commonwealth Parliament that it is time to end discrimination against individuals on the basis of who they love.

We urge you to support this motion to help further equality for same-sex couples and their families.
