| 20 September 2012 - House of Representatives vote disappointing The New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) today expressed its disappointment with the outcome of a vote in the House of Representatives on marriage equality. The bill before the House of Representatives, which was defeated 98-42, would have represented a significant step towards ensuring equality under the law for all Australians. “Although this represents a temporary set-back, we hope that state politicians, from all political parties, will now join forces in introducing legislation in each of their jurisdictions, as Tasmania has done and as is proposed in New South Wales, to turn the hopes and aspirations of thousands of Australians into reality”, said Justin Koonin, NSW GLRL co-convenor. “The momentum for marriage equality is unstoppable and change is inevitable”, added Koonin. Lainie Arnold, GLRL co-convenor commented, “There have been many heartening statements made during the debate on this bill and those who voted in favour did so with courage and an unwavering sense of commitment to ensuring equality for hundreds of thousands of gay and lesbian Australians. The struggle for their rights will continue and we remain optimistic that the wave of support for marriage equality will ultimately prevail.” Arnold added, “The NSW Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby calls on the federal Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Tony Abbott, to give Coalition members a conscience vote during future debates on this important issue, following the progressive lead of NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell.” |
