Federal Election

2004 promises to be an important year for our fight for lesbian and gay equality. In the last few years lesbians and gay men around Australia have celebrated numerous victories for our rights at a state level. In stark contrast, not a single significant advance has been made at federal level where same-sex couples continue to be treated disadvantageous compared to other de facto couples. We don't get the same deal on our superannuation when our partner dies, we are disadvantaged by taxation laws and there is no Federal anti-discrimination legislation.
Despite these obvious inequalities, the Howard Government to date has resisted even the most basic reforms while most minor parties continue to strongly advocate for our community. Encouragingly, the Australian Labor Party has recently indicated a willingness to commit to reforms. Against this political backdrop, the outcome of the 2004 federal election will be significant for our community.
The GLRL is currently developing our 2004 Federal Election Campaign, which will be in the lead up to the election. We will be working hard to secure commitments from the major political parties on issues of importance to our community. We will report those commitments (or the lack thereof) back to our community so that every gay man and lesbian can make their vote count! The federal election is our chance to have a say, so make sure you are enrolled to vote so that your voice is heard.
