Take Action
Taking action is easy. While the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby does a
lot of work in this area, the policy makers (ie state and federal parliament)
need to know that our work is supported by the community. It only takes
a few minutes of your time and can make a huge difference in affecting
change and working towards equality for gay men and lesbians.
There are lots of ways that you can take action to make a difference.
This includes:
- writing letters, emails and faxes outlining your concern to your local
council representatives, state members of parliament, federal members
of parliament, government departments.
- ringing up the offices of your local elected representatives and expressing
your concern
- making submissions to parliamentary inquiries
- participating in community consultations and forums
- writing letters to the editor for newspapers. Eg. Sydney Star Observer,
Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph etc.
- getting your friends and family to get involved in taking action
Points to remember
- make sure that you address the person you are contacting in the appropriate
manner and format. This can be checked from the relevant website to get
the right information (eg. NSW
Parliament Website www.parliament.nsw.gov.au)
- keep your points concise and relevant to the enquiry you are making
- try to ask questions rather than make statements in order to get a relevant
response from the policy maker you are approaching
- if you do not receive a response to your enquiry within a reasonable
amount of time make sure that you follow it up and express your right
to have your elected representative respond to your enquiry.
Start taking action now. Let's get equal!
