7 June 2007 - Report confirms, time to act on parenting reform

The Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) has welcomed the Victorian Law Reform Commission report into Assisted Reproductive Technology and Adoption. Among the report’s recommendations include recognising children parented by lesbian and gay couples and giving non-discriminatory access to IVF, surrogacy and adoption.

“This report is a vindication to what we have been saying all along. Same-sex families are a contemporary reality. Children raised by same-sex couples deserve the stability and legal certainty that comes with recognition of their relationships with their parents”, said Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby spokesperson, Ghassan Kassisieh. “The NSW Attorney General has told us he will be waiting on the release of the Victorian report before he considers the situation in NSW. The report is now here in black and white. It says there is absolutely no reason why we should wait any longer to recognise the rights of children parented by gays and lesbians”, Kassisieh added. Following our meeting with the The Hon John Hatzistergos MLC in May, the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby will step up the campaign for parenting recognition in NSW.  Our campaign will include:
  • Soliciting support from other legal and welfare organisations to write to the Attorney General and publicly support law reform.
  • Meeting with NSW parliamentary members to press the need for urgent reform.
  • Arming the community with the resources needed to put pressure on the NSW government by sending emails and meeting with their local representatives.

  • Requesting a meeting with the Attorney General to follow up his progress on the issue.
