Religion and Sexuality DEALING WITH SEXUALITY, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND COMMUNITY ATTITUDES The majority of history between organised religious groups and gays and lesbians from the ninth to the twentieth centuries is an extremely unhappy one. In many instances, interpretations of the Bible, Church tradition and doctrine reserved an especially virulent attitude to sexual acts between members of the same sex. Many in the our community have had a religious upbringing; sometimes with negative experiences and sometimes with positive ones. Lesbians and gay men often participate in religious groups. Like the Rev. Dorothy McRae-McMahon of the Uniting church, they sometimes lead them. Like acclaimed writer Jeanette Winterson, they sometimes need to escape from them. Religion and religious beliefs continue to exert a powerful influence within our society. Sometimes religious institutions successfully oppose equal rights for gay men and lesbians. In recognition of the role played by organised religion the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby established a Beliefs Task Force made up of gay men and lesbians from a variety of religious backgrounds to look at the issue and at strategies for dealing with it. The Beliefs Task Force met from 1995-1997 and produced a discussion paper, Monitoring Australian Society and Beliefs, designed to promote constructive dialogue about belief systems and how they influence the rights and obligations of Australians.
