31 August 2012 - NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby backs Tasmanian Bill for same-sex marriage The New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) today lent its support to a comprehensive Bill before the Tasmanian Parliament, which seeks to legalise same-sex marriage. The Same-Sex Marriage Bill (2012), which passed the House of Assembly by a vote of 13-11 overnight, provides a comprehensive legal framework for same- sex marriage, by setting out the marriageable age, ceremonial requirements, rights for married couples under corresponding laws, as well as establishing the jurisdiction of the state Supreme Court to hear applications for dissolution. If passed in its current form, the Bill will see marriage equality become a reality in the state. Welcoming the passage of the Bill through the Tasmanian Parliament’s House of Assembly, Dr Justin Koonin, co-convenor of the NSW GLRL, asserted “Tasmania has a historic opportunity to bring the dream of marriage equality to fruition for thousands of its citizens, and the passage of the Bill through the House of Assembly overnight is a significant step in this process.” “The NSW GLRL is joining calls for the Tasmanian Legislative Council to show courage and leadership and to vote in support of this historic legislation, to end discrimination and extend equality under the law to all”, Dr Koonin added. Dr Koonin further commented, “In light of recent moves by the Australian Capital Territory’s Legislative Assembly to introduce civil unions with a legally binding ceremony, this Bill is part of a growing wave of support that will bring the goal of marriage equality one step closer to realisation for thousands of gay and lesbian Australians who have historically been excluded from the institution of marriage. We hope it encourages parliaments in other states and territories, as well as our federal parliament, to follow Tasmania’s lead.” For further comment please contact Justin Koonin, NSW GLRL co-convenor, on 0414 269 339 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
