4 August 2005 - Pink hearts for equality On Saturday August 13, the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby will be hosting a mass planting of pink hearts to symbolise the campaign for full equality for same sex relationships. This rally is supported by ACON and New Mardi Gras. The event, held on the one year anniversary of the federal marriage ban against same sex couples, will send the strong message that same sex couples and families deserve complete legal equality. The planting will take place at Victoria Park, Camperdown from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. There will be stage entertainment as well as a community brunch picnic to celebrate this important community message (BYO). Politicians from across the political spectrum, as well as other supportive public figures have been invited to plant a heart to show their support. According to Julie McConnell, co-convenor, “ Last year’s marriage ban was a statement based on discrimination and prejudice against lesbians and gay men; it was a statement which said that our Love is not equal. “ “We will be planting pink hearts to show that our relationships with each other, and with our children, are equal and deserve full legal equality”. ACON and New Mardi Gras are urging community members to take a stand and show their support on the day. “This is an opportunity for us to show just how strongly our community feels about the need for equal recognition of our relationships and families, “ said ACON President Adrian Lovney. Marcus Bourget, chair of New Mardi Gras, added “ New Mardi Gras supports the work of the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby in fighting for our rights.
