| Join us on The Yellow Brick Road to Equality! For approximately 23 years the NSW Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) has helped shape a fairer and more equal world for lesbians, gay men and their families. We’ve fought hard for equal love rights, secured legal recognition for our families, pushed for an equal age of consent and stood up against discrimination and violence. But our work is far from over. The GLRL is proud to announce its theme for Mardi Gras ‘11, “The Yellow Brick Road to Equality"! Come join us on our 2011 "Yellow Brick Road” float to continue our fight for full equality. To Join To join us in the parade, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with your name, mobile number (or other contact number) & T-Shirt size. Our Theme The overall theme for Mardi Gras 2011 is “Say Something”. What we want to say is that the journey to equality for the gay and lesbian community has been a long one. We have many successes to celebrate, but there are still battles to be won and we will not stop until we have achieved full equality. We have chosen the “Yellow Brick Road” from the Wizard of Oz to symbolise the long journey towards equality. Our truck will be adorned with a giant Wizard of Oz, and we’ll be dancing to remixes of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. We are also planning a historical display, showing the progress of the fight for equality from the beginnings of Mardi Gras to the present (highlighting recent successes such as adoption and surrogacy reform in NSW), and then onto what lies ahead (comprehensive and inclusive federal anti-discrimination legislation, and full marriage equality). Costume Some of us will be marching, some dancing. Dancers will be dressed in Wizard of Oz theme (be creative!). Marchers will be given a GLRL T-shirt to wear. Cost Mardi Gras Membership Package $50 (includes membership to the GLRL) Dancers $35 ($25 student/concession/member) (to cover costume and help finance the construction of the float, and light and sound system) Marchers $20 ($10 student/concession/member) Dance Rehearsals Dance rehearsals will be held at 6:30pm in Victoria Park, behind the New Law School at the University of Sydney, on the following dates: Mon 14/2, Thu 17/2, Mon 21/2, Mon 28/2, Thu 3/3 (as well as a final dress rehearsal on the day of the parade). Dancers are asked to attend at least 3 rehearsals. In the event of wet weather, dancers will be notified with the details of the new venue. Float Building Workshops We will be building our float together at the Mardi Gras Workshop (107 Redfern St, Redfern) from 12pm on the following days: Sat 12/2, Sat 19/2, Sat 26/2 All welcome. Dancers are asked to attend at least one float-building workshop.
