PRESS RELEASE -
LOBBY TARGETS FEDERAL ISSUES
The Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby of NSW has been targeting Labor MPs
in a push this year to have Equal Rights as an election issue, particularly
in the areas of Superannuation and Anti-Discrimination legislation.
“We are delighted to hear the Leader of the Opposition, Kim
Beazley make a commitment to recognise same sex couples under law. This
further cements what the Lobby has already heard from Shadow Attorney
General Robert McClelland” said Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby
Co-Convenor Ms Alex Sosnov.
“Superannuation is an area that people often don’t realise
contains blatant discrimination. Add to that its compulsory nature, Mr
Beazley is right when he says it’s a reasonable thing to give us
recognition. We are keen to hear more about what other areas Labor will
commit to reforming." added Co-Convenor Mr Anthony Schembri.
Mr Beazley’s comments are a refreshing antidote to John Howard’s
blatant prejudice against same sex couples.
“It’s amazing that The Prime Minister can say he does
not support discrimination against people because of their sexuality,
yet his Government has done just that. He even attempted to drive a wedge
between parents and their gay or lesbian children by suggesting all such
parents are dissapointed in their children. The Howard Government has
consistently opposed superannuation rights also.” commented
Alex Sosnov.
“We challenge all politicians to argue that equal treatment
under the law is not the right for all Australians regardless of sexuality.
And we expect reform as a matter of priority” stated Anthony
Schembri.
