MAJOR REPORT - April 2000

The NSW Anti-Discrimination Act

PART B - The Scope of the Anti-Discrimination Act –
Response to the Recommendations

3. Extension of Employment/Work Environment

We note the Report’s comment that “work is probably the most important area of operation under the ADA. It is important not only because it has a direct effect on an individual's lifestyle and social status, but also because it has consistently constituted the largest area of complaints received by the ADB” [par.4.33]. We have noted above that discrimination against lesbians and gay men in the workplace is alarmingly common.

We support the extension of the Act to all areas of employment and to include work done by volunteers, trainees or unpaid workers within the definition of work [Recommendation 9].
