Lobby AGM Welcomes New Faces

The Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby held the Association’s Annual General Meeting In November 2001 and welcomed a number of new faces to the Committee of Management.

Alexandra Sosnov and Anthony Schembri were elected Co-Convenors for 2002. Alex works in financial services management and her professional background is in community social work, counselling and design. Alex was a past staff and board member of ACON and announcer with OUTfm, and is also the immediate past acting female Co-Convenor of the GLRL and past Convenor of the GLRL’s Events and Fundraising Working Party. Anthony Schembri works in social work services management for South East Health of the NSW Health Department, he teaches health social work at the University of NSW where he is also a PhD candidate. He is a past President of 2010 and Co-Director of the GLRL’s Anti-Violence Project and the immediate past male Convenor of the GLRL.

A number of members of the GLRL Committee retired at the AGM including Secretary Michael Bracken and History Project Convenor Michael Flynn. There were also some resignations and appointments through the year. Alex and Anthony acknowledged and thanked the retiring Committee Members for their contribution to the GLRL over a number of years.

Jenny Mann was re-elected Treasurer and Andrew Pickles Association Secretary. Jenny works as a Medical Rehabilitation Specialist and Andrew in planning law as a Barrister.

New Members elected included Luke Gahan, Grant Coloquhoun, Anthony Powell, Suzie Tay, Lex, and Gillian Mahony. Re-elected Members are Naomi Sharp, Kathy Sant, Shane Garland., Jenni Millbank and Nikki Maloney.

Anthony Schembri said, ‘The 2002 Committee brings together an experienced and enthusiastic membership with both new faces and continuing members with skills in health and welfare rights, campaign research and development, lobbying and advocacy, legal practice as well as skills in events and fundraising’. ‘These collective skills place the GLRL is an excellent position to continue our important work in 2002’, he added.

‘2002 is looking to be a busy year for the GLRL as we continue the fight for equality especially in the areas of continuing relationship reform, equalising age of consent, gay and lesbian parenting and ongoing anti-discrimination work’, noted Alex Sosnov.
